BOOK REVIEW ~ BLACK MOON BY J.D. TYLER

Title: Black Moon (Alpha Pack, Book Three)
Author: JD Tyler
Release Date: December 4, 2012

Reviewer bought own eBook copy for review

Ever since he saved Dr. Mackenzie Grant’s life, panther shifter and sorcerer Kalen Black has had trouble keeping the beautiful doctor out of his thoughts, and his heart. The brush with death awakened an intense passion between them—one that for the first time had the notorious loner letting down his guard.

With the Alpha Pack battling an evil Fae who is slowly gaining control over Kalen’s mind, Kalen can no longer trust his own actions, and he breaks off his affair with Mackenzie in order to keep her safe. But when Mackenzie learns that she is carrying Kalen’s child, no amount of danger will keep her away from the man she loves. To protect his mate and unborn child, Kalen will have to battle a terrible evil, unleash the full fury of his power, and risk destroying them all…

JD Tyler also writes under the name Jo Davis, which is how I first discovered this talented author. I fell in love with her contemporary romance series, The Firefighters of Station Five.

The Alpha Pack series is about the paranormal world where military soldiers  were turned into shifters and now fight to protect humans from rogues--paranormal creatures that prey on innocent victims.

Kalen Black has always felt alone and different from his brothers-in-arms. He has had a horrific past where he was treated as an outcast, sold his body for survival, and didn't have the love of family to embrace him. The only one who truly cared about Kalen had been his grandmother. She gave him a pendent to protect him from the darkness and the evil that would one day try to control him. It was foretold to him that he would grow to become a powerful sorcerer and would be tempted by the darkside of magic. The pendent he wore must never be removed and it would help protect him.

Now, as a member of the Alpha Pack, Kalen still feels the claws of his past sinking deeper. And when Malik, the Unseelie King, sets his sights on Kalen, the fate of all mankind is threatened and in great danger.

Kalen struggles with the darkness within him and thirsts for the blood that Malik delivers. Malik's evil words cause Kalen to doubt the loyalty of his friends and desire a more sinister life. The only thing that frees him from the possible malevolence of Malik's plans is the ray of light that his mate, Dr. Mackenzie can give him.

In the entire story, we watch as Kalen faces this darkness and see him fall prey to Malik's trickery. And we experience the horrible past and what Kalen has suffered through the years. We also find out the relationship that Blue, the Seelie Prince, has to Kalen and the connection of Malik to both of them. Secrets are spilled just as much as the blood of the Sluagh.

At the climax, we get the showdown of all showdowns--and Kalen has the power to either fight and destroy Malik or turn against his brothers.

All in all, Black Moon is a great addition to this series, but it was not my favorite. After reading many of Tyler's books, I was a little disappointed with the smexin' between Mac and Kalen. Tyler is usually spot on with her descriptions and emotions, but I found the dialogue during these scenes inadequate and lacking the usual *UMPH* that Tyler is great for.

But I am still looking forward to the next book in the series, Hunter's Heart.
