ARC BOOK REVIEW ~ DARKNESS RISES BY DIANNE DUVALL

Title: Darkness Rises ( Immortal Guardians, Book Four)
Author: Dianne Duvall
Release Date: October 1, 2013

ARC provided by NetGalley

Krysta is used to getting the drop on vampires. Her "special abilities" aren't much, but the plan is simple--she plays helpless pretty young thing to lure them in. Then her shoto swords come out and it's bye-bye, bloodsucker. Until one night she finds herself with an unexpected ally. He's a vampire, all right, but different. Mysterious. Handsome. And more interested in saving her skin than draining it.

Etienne has been an Immortal Guardian for two hundred years--long enough to know that Krysta is special. He can't stop thinking about her long legs, even more than her short swords. Then he discovers the vamps she's exterminating have friends in high places, and the Guardians are in danger too. He'll have to accept Krysta's help to save them. The stakes for a mortal are high. But the cost to his heart might be higher. .

Book Review

I admit that I have only read the first book of Duvall's series, Darkness Dawns. But I love a great vampire book, and enjoyed the first book, so I had to jump ahead a bit in the story line in order to read Darkness Rises.

That being said, the story is easy to follow and I did little fumbling along the way trying to catch up.

Duvall has created a world where vampires are the bad guys. Her vampires have been infected with a virus that eventually turns the vampire crazy.  And it is up to the Immortal Guardians to hunt them down and destroy them before they kill or can infect others.

These Immortal Warriors are different in that they too have been infected with the same virus--but because of their unique gifts (ability to heal, ability to read others thoughts, etc), the virus doesn't infect them in the same way. They maintain their gifts and only the positive aspects of being a vampire.

Krysta and her brother, Sean, have been hunting vampires for over six years. With their special abilities, they are able to demolish and kill those vamps that prey on the innocent. But a run-in with the sexy Immortal Guardian, Etienne, changes everything.

And Krysta finds herself falling in love with a vampire. Except, Etienne is different. And it is those differences that attract her to the sexy Immortal Guardian as he exposes her to another kind of world. Can she trust this stranger to be who and more importantly, what he is?

Duvall has built a solid world with attractive Alpha heroes who are bad-ass to the bone. She intertwines several plots with ease and the secondary characters almost outshine the intended couple of this book. Fans of the paranormal and vampire world will love to sink their teeth in this sexy series.

Nicole stilled, and then slowly raised her head to peer at him. Oh yeah, his eyes were on fire now...and so was she. How the hell did that happen so fast? No kissing, touching, nothing. Just a couple of words and she was ready to go.

Jake picked up his plate and coffee and carried them to the island, then returned to stand beside her. Nicole tipped her head back, expecting him to kiss her, but instead he caught her chair and turned it so she faced him. He then scooped her up and set her on the table where his cake had been moments ago.

"These have to go," Jake announced, reaching for the button of her jeans. "You should wear skirts and dresses," he added conversationally as he slid the button free and started on the zipper. "it would make things much easier."

"I'll have to buy some," Nicole said breathlessly as he slid the zipper down.

I love me some vampire lovin'! And Jake is super sexy in Lynsay's newest release.

Connect with Caris

I fell in love with Caris Roane when I read the first book from her Guardians of Ascension series. I immediately loved her gritty writing style and her alpha heroes.

So it was easy peasy to say yes to review her novella, Embrace The Dark, the beginning of another series--The Blood Rose.

Gerrod is a Mastyr vampire and leads one of the Nine Realms--a parallel dimension to the human world where paranormal creatures live.

He has a strange yet undeniable attraction to Abigail, a human woman who runs a bakery along with an elf. It seems some of the paranormal creatures has a sweet tooth.

But Gerrod has spent the last year fighting his attraction and comes across as moody, stern, and Abigail thinks he doesn't like her very much. But Abigail has noticed him. And she sees how much Gerrod gives to his people. He is loyal, protective and fierce to those in his realm.

However, there are dangers lurking in the realm. A red misted danger that is called the Invictus. They hunt on the innocent, human and paranormal creatures are not safe from the wrath. It is during a wedding when the Invictus strike against the castle, swarming in a large unheard of number. Gerrod protects those around him, but has been hurt. And the blood starvation that constantly plagues him is at its peak.

Abigail is touched by how Gerrod always seems to take care of others and never himself. So, she offers her body and her blood to the sexy Mastyr. It seems that Abigail has something that she can give more freely than no other. She has a medical condition where her body produces too much blood, which causes her heart to work harder. Usually she donates her blood, but she offers it to Gerrod as a one time gift. She wants to take care of him with no strings attached for just one night.

But a strange connection has been formed the minute Abigail and Gerrod touch. The frequency that flows through Gerrod easily flows over to Abigail. They can talk to each other telepathically. And Abigail's blood sates Gerrod like no other.

There is something more going on than they can fathom.

Overall, Embrace the Blood is a adequate start to a new series. There just wasn't enough of a connection for me to Gerrod and Abigail as a couple. But Roane's world is built solid and with a few quirky and entertaining characters. I love the trolls that Roane has created in this world. After reading the Guardians of the Ascension, I found Embrace The Dark a bit weaker as a novella.
The other point of issue for me were the Invictus. I wasn't quite clear on their creation and what their goal was. Even after reading it a few times.

Embrace The Blood has promise to be a good paranormal read for those who have an addiction to vampires.

SEXY SNIPPETS ~ A KISS OF BLOOD BY PAMELA PALMER

"Step forward, tesoro mio," he said softly, his voice husky and sexy as hell. "Grasp the post of the bed."
Heat rushed deep into her body and, intrigued despite herself, she stepped forward. She glanced back at him. "What are you going to do?"
The small, devilish smile combined with the heat of his eyes had her pulse soaring, her body dampening, and her legs turning to jelly. Whatever he had in mind, she wanted.
Long fingers sled her jeans down to her thighs, then returned for her panties. "Step back, cara. Lean over."

I am really diggin' this series. It's dark, the vampires drinking blood as well as emotions from their prey. They are deadly and some are losing their last pieces of their humanity, falling in a sinister darkness that threatens to break them. I love it! And Arturo Mazza has discovered that Quinn is the sunshine he needs in his life. Great paranormal read about a hidden world of vamps, weres, traders, and other unique characters with a fresh spin.

Now it's your turn to show me your sexy! Leave me a comment, I'd love to hear from you ~

BOOK REVIEW ~ TAKE IT LIKE A VAMP BY CANDACE HAVENS

Title: Take It Like A Vamp
Author: Candace Havens
Release Date: May 20, 2013
Originally published: July 21, 2012

ARC provided by NetGalley

Vampire Nick Christos might’ve been born in the Middle Ages, but the good old days seem tame compared to the last eight years he’s spent ruling the Supernatural Council. His only respite is with his cute neighbor Casey Meyers, a woman he wants more than any undead man should. Sure, he's forced to take a cold shower after every encounter, but there’s no way he’ll test his own strength by getting too close to a human, and he’s not willing to risk her life--not with bloodthirsty family on the prowl out to ruin Nick’s life.

When said Nick’s kin shows up, the innocent Casey is caught in the middle of a centuries old fight, and Nick’s biggest fear is realized. Now, instead of keeping his hands off his neighbor, he’ll risk everything to save the human he’s come to love.

Book Review

First off, when I requested this book from NetGalley, I had no idea that I had already read it back in Aug '12. The cover threw me. It was updated.

This was the original cover:

Hmm...not sure which one is better.

Anyhoo--

This story is very similar to one I just read.  Nick Christos and Casey Meyers are neighbors and best friends. Both are attracted to the other, but keeping their feelings hidden from each other.

Casey is human and Nick is afraid to risk putting her in any type of danger a relationship with him may cause. But things change when Nick is forced to marry by the Vampire Council--or else lose his seat on the Council.

Casey is the insecure wallflower with huge self image issues. She is attracted to her best friend, but suffers from "there is no way 'he could be attracted to me" syndrome.

Take It Like A Vamp has a very humorous side with a few laugh-out-loud quotes. You also have a raving lunatic ex-girlfriend, Alvinia who is determined to get Nick back, wrecking havoc between the lovebirds. With all that said, the overabundance of cheesy dialogue deflated some of my enjoyment for this promising and steamy read.

Casey's insecurities made her such a weak heroine and I ended up losing sympathy near the climax of the story. Nick came across as whiny and that turned me off as well in some parts of the book.

All in all these two characters could have been a bit stronger, a bit more likable. A sweet romance that borders on annoying with chintzy dialogue that lacked depth and a grittiness I hoped for but never seemed to get.

BOOK REVIEW ~ DON'T BITE THE BRIDESMAID BY TIFFANY ALLEE

Title: Don't Bite The Bridesmaid (Sons of Kane Series)
Author: Tiffany Allee
Release Date: May 27, 2013

ARC provided by author for honest review

Alice Shepard needs one thing: a date for her sister's wedding. And not just any date. A hunk who will make her fiancé rue the day he left her for her best friend. Her drop-dead gorgeous neighbor fits the bill—even if he is a bit quirky and never comes out during the day—and Alice has downed just enough appletinis to ask him. But she makes it quite clear that there will be no funny business.

Spending a week on a cruise ship full of humans while sleeping close to his sexy next-door neighbor sounds like a helluva bad idea to vampire Noah Thorpe. But his friends need time to get him out of a shotgun wedding—a vampire bonding that will tie his fate to a female vampire he's never met. And Alice's offer comes at just the right time.

What could possibly go wrong?

Book Review

Alice Shepard is attracted to her sexy and mysterious neighbor, Noah Thorpe. And she is trying to gather up her courage one appletini at a time in order to ask him to be her plus one at her sister's upcoming wedding. She's not looking for a relationship--her ex has made her bitter about men--but she wants Noah to pretend to be her boyfriend during the nuptials.

Noah Thorpe isn't like most men--in fact, he isn't human. He is a two hundred year old vampire with his own set of problems. And right now he is looking for a place to "hide" while avoiding a forced arranged marriage to a perfect stranger. When Alice offers the role of pretend beau during a wedding cruise, he realizes that this is the perfect escape.

Except being near Alice makes Noah want to sink his fangs into her creamy white flesh and do very, VERY, bad things.

Noah is determined not to lose control and keep his distance from the very attractive, very tempting, Alice Shepard. He can't afford to sleep with her, much less bite her. But when the two are thrown together on a ship in the middle of the ocean, things become heated and emotions bloom.

But how will Alice react to Noah being a vampire? And will Alice lose her heart once again, only to realize that Noah may have his own hidden agenda? Secrets threaten to keep them apart before they even truly begin in this sweet, sometimes humorous, and sometimes sizzling romantic read.

"What are you doing?" I managed.
His expression was nothing short of ferocious, and if his gaze grew any hotter, I'd burn beneath it.
"You've never had angry sex. I'm about to show you what you've been missing."
At those words, the throbbing between my legs became painfully intense. In spite of that, I stopped him when he swooped down to kiss me again.
"You said you'd never take an ex-lover back."
His mouth descended to my neck with devastating effect. "You've proven to be the exception to my rules."

WOW--Vlad speaks and I whimper.  I love this book, this series, and this author. AMAZING.

Excerpt from Crimson Moon

He dropped my wrist, and turned around to face the downtown skyline. Seconds later, I heard a small growl come from Alex. I felt my breath catch in my throat as he turned back to face me. It was like the person in front of me now was a totally different person then who was standing in front of me not less than 30 seconds ago. Everything about him now had an air of dark masculine power. The biggest difference was his eyes. I looked into his eyes and was mesmerized. Alex trapped me in his gaze and held me there. His eyes were a dark violet, with an outer ring of light grey, almost silvery. He had this smirk on his lips, that if I didn’t know any better, was almost predatory in nature. This was all before he opened his mouth to speak. Good God, that voice! I swear if I wasn’t already enthralled by his eyes, then his voice would do me in. I suddenly fought the urge to swoon.

His voice had dropped at least two octaves and was raspy, rough, almost like coarse sand.

“Is this what you wanted, Jade? Take a good look because this is the true me; the hunter, the predator, hell, I’m the top of the food chain.”As he was talking, he moved around behind me, whispering in one ear then in the other. He now had this bold swagger about his walk that wasn’t there before. It was almost like he owned the place. While I was listening to him, I could feel him sliding one arm around my waist and his other hand trailing down my cheek, burning my skin along the way. I knew at that point, if he didn’t have his arm wrapped around me, my legs would have given out from under me for sure. There was only one word to describe what was going on.

It was torture.

Specifically; slow, erotic and predatory torture. Thing was, I was helpless to stop it. Everything about him at that moment had me rooted in place, powerless. Yet I still wasn’t scared of him. Even seeing his true nature up close and personal didn’t frighten me. He stepped from behind to face me once again. As Alex faced me, within a blink of an eye, he had pulled me to him, crushing my soft body to his steel chest and pulling my right arm up to his lips.

“If you’re trying to scare me, Alex, it’s not working.” He just smiled and brushed his nose against the back of my wrist. “Oh, I know it’s not working, Jade, darling. Actually, it’s doing quite the opposite. But, if I wanted to have you, there would be nothing that could stop me from taking you. You forget, Jade, I can sense emotions and right now, I have you completely defenseless. I could take you into that cozy bedroom of yours and after a very satisfying night…”

Excerpt for Twist of Fate:

Getting up and smiling at Jade, Kalieigh took her leave. I turned back to Jade and could think of nothing else but kissing her senseless, so I indulged and did just that. I think Jade knew what I was going to do because as soon as my lips slanted over hers, she pulled me down on top of her as she laid down on the couch. I grinned into her lips and tried to keep most of my weight off her by propping myself up on my arms. She growled and pulled me down hard. I sunk into her and pretty much all was lost.

I felt her arms slide up and around my neck and her nails scraping the back of my neck as I moved from her swollen red lips to her neck. I found her pulse point and attacked it softly. I felt her nails sink into my back, right between my shoulder blades, and drag across. The little minx was pushing at my self-control and she knew exactly what she was doing. I pulled up and looked, to find she was smiling wickedly at me. I smirked right back at her.
I pulled her arms from around my neck and stretched them out over the top of her head. I felt her struggle, but the more she did, the more I kept her where she was.

“So this is how we’re going to play it, hmm? Have it your way, angel…” was all I said to her. Her eyes had darkened to nearly black by this point.

“Caleb, for the love of mercy, shut up and kiss me!”
I could hear the faint tone of desperation in her voice. The knowledge that I caused this sent a surge of smug pride through me. Releasing her arms, I bent my head and kissed her again, sliding my tongue across her pursed lips, demanding entrance. Jade relented and opened her lips, allowing me access to the blissful warmth inside. I could feel a rumble between us, but, surprisingly, it came from Jade’s throat. I ran my hand slowly up the side of her torso, and up the side of her neck, feeling the muscles tense up. As my hand went back down, I slowed down enough so that my fingers were just skimming her skin. She twisted from side to side to get me to relent, but I wasn’t done with her yet. I leaned in and ran my tongue across the outer rim of her ear. That elicited a moan from Jade that sent sparks down my spine. Suddenly, the noble part of me decided to rear its head. I pulled myself up from a flushed and panting Jade, who was looking up at me with a mixture of heat, confusion and a hint of murderous intent. I closed my eyes, trying to gain a small semblance of control.

“If you are having any second thoughts, stop me now because this is the last chance. I want you to be sure Jade.”

Jade sat up, grabbed the front of my shirt and jerked me towards her. I could feel the heat of her glare, so I opened my eyes to find her eyes had darkened with desire. Her response came out as a hiss.

“The only thought I am having right this second is that if you do not take me upstairs and finish what we started the night of the party, I will personally STAKE you with a silver spike.”

The next thing I knew, she had ripped my shirt completely open and was running her hands over my now exposed chest.

I hauled her up, slamming my lips on hers and flew us both up to my master bedroom. I pretty much tossed her on the bed, and as I stalked towards her, step by step, we were both losing clothes at a very rapid pace. When I reached the edge of the bed, Jade beckoned with a crook of her finger and a sexy smirk on her face. I crawled up the bed and as I hovered over her body, I thanked every god that would listen for giving me such a beautiful creature to love. Sentiments aside, I leaned down and chuckled hotly in her ear.

“I hope you know I have wanted this to happen for a while. Are you ready for a workout? I know I am.”

I spent the rest of the night and following day making good on my promise.

Here's my candidate for the week:

Book Three, Nathaniel Cade Novel

The Presidential Campaign Trail, 2012: A political operative and a volunteer are brutally murdered while caught in a compromising position. Written in their blood on the wall of the crime scene: IT’S GOOD TO BE BACK. And with that, a centuries-old horror known only as the Boogeyman returns to taunt Nathaniel Cade, the President’s Vampire. Against the backdrop of the 2012 presidential race, with the threat of constant exposure by the media, Cade and Zach must stop the one monster Cade has never been able to defeat completely. And they must do it before the Boogeyman adds another victim to his long and bloody list: the President of the United States himself.

I admit I have the first of this series in paperback, but haven't read it. A good friend rec'd it to me and devoured it in two days--and it's a pretty thick book. But this cover--YUM! It sang to me this week. Love the way you get to peek at the hero of the book through the iron work--and he looks super bad ass, no? Note the blood on the iron as well. I think this cover is super cool and it makes me want to dig through my piles of books to find the first of the series, lol.

What was your pick for this week?

ARC BOOK REVIEW ~ SOMETHING WITCHY THIS WAY COMES BY H.P. MALLORY

Blurb from Goodreads
ARC provided by NetGalley

Expected Release Date: September 25, 2012

A witch’s work is never done, and in bestselling author H. P. Mallory’s mesmerizing new novel, Jolie Wilkins finds that the real magic is only just beginning.

For smart and sexy witch Jolie Wilkins, being Queen of the Underworld is a royal pain. Back from a round of time travel, Jolie must now protect her realm from the sinister Lurkers—a powerful breed of half-humans bent on conquering the undead. And if there’s one thing she knows, it’s that the supernatural never go down without a fight.

At least Jolie has her soul mate (and finally official boyfriend), warlock Rand Balfour, by her side. Honorable, brave, and unbelievably handsome, Rand is everything Jolie wants in a man. So why can’t she forget the dangerously alluring vampire, Sinjin Sinclair? With her private life heating up and a battle boiling over, Jolie sets out to prove that in matters of love and war, the fairer hex has its own set of charms.

Caution: This review may contain a major spoiler--don't read if you want to be surprised.

I have been on the Joli/Rand/Sinjin love triangle train since the beginning. And man, has it been a ride.

The Jolie Wilkins series started out in small tarot shop where Jolie worked along side her bff, Christa.  In walks the sexy, dark haired Brit, Rand Balfour, who tells her not only is he a powerful warlock, but that Jolie is a witch. I was instanly hooked on this series, and I fell hard for that sexy man, Rand.

These two characters have been on one emotional roller coaster ride that I have loved and enjoyed immensely. Although I hoped that Jolie and Rand would end up together and have a beautiful HEA, I must admit that Sinjin made this decision rather difficult. That smexy vamp with the snarky mouth and incredible sexual chemistry between he and Jolie had me questioning my loyalty to Rand. He was just THAT sexy.

Books one and two ( Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble and Toil and Trouble) were a super fantastic read that had me on the edge of my seat. And I was (and still am) supremely stoked that H.P. got a major publishing deal for her books. She rocked my girly bits and did some serious vag blocking with Jolie and Rand. I mentally cursed and praised the woman for her teasing game.

What has me sadly disappointed is that I don't think this series lived up to its full potential--at least for me. I was foaming at the mouth when H.P. left the readers hanging on the proverbial cliff, when Sinjin traveled back in time (Book 4, The Witch Is Back) to win Jolie's heart. Yes, we know that isn't what he tells her, but that vamp has fallen hard. He just can't admit it.

And Something Witchy This Way Comes left me feeling slightly empty and wondering what happened to my beautiful characters.

After "returning" to the present, Jolie faces the hard decision of how she should punish Sinjin for his trickery. She flip flops back and forth until my head is literally spinning. The inner dialogue is a bit repetitive and Jolie never seems to truly make up her mind about anything--other than the fact that Rand is her soul mate, her love, and that they are truly bonded.

The Lurkers are also in the forefront in this final book. And the ending isn't truly an ending-nothing is really 'wrapped up'. I know that according to H.P. Mallory's web page, she will be doing a spin-off of this series, so hopefully some questions that are never answered may be set to rights.

I hate to give spoilers in reviews, but some of the plot developments here were weak for me. And an epilogue would have been fantastic considering that Jolie has a certain sitch going on that will not be mentioned here **zips lips**.

I missed the quirky and sometimes laugh-out-loud moments that I had in books one and two. Overall, SWTWC left  me wanting something more.

Will I stop reading H.P.? Meh...I don't think so. She hooked me once, I'm sure she can do it again. I am looking forward to how she develops the spin-off to this witchy-entertaining series.
