Author: Kallypso Masters
Release Date: September 16, 2012
eBook Format

Reviewer purchased copy of eBook for review

Savannah Gentry, now Savi Baker, escaped the torture and degradation forced upon her by a sadistic father for eleven years and has made a safe life for herself and her daughter. When her father threatens her peace of mind—and her daughter's safety—Savi runs to Damián Orlando for protection. Their one day together eight years earlier changed both their lives and resulted in a secret she can no longer hide. But being with Damián reawakens feelings she wants buried—and stirs up an onslaught of disturbing flashbacks that leave her shaken to the core with little hope of ever being a sexual being again.

Damián has his own dragons to fight, but has never forgotten the one perfect day he spent with Savannah in a cave at the beach. He will go to the ends of the earth to protect Savi and her daughter, but can never be the whole man she deserves after a firefight in Iraq. Besides, the trauma of war and resulting PTSD has led him to find his place as the Masters at Arms Club's favorite sadist. Savi needs someone gentle and loving, not the broken man he has become. But he sees that the lifestyle he's come to embrace also can help Savi regain control of her life and sexuality. How can he not help redirect her negative thoughts and actions if she needs him?

Kally girl, you had me at Adam Montague, but HOLY HELL--Damian is hands down HOT and DELISH with a sinfully bold D!  I now have a new favorite Dom.

I knew there was something special about Orlando when he first made an appearance in the MASTER AT ARMS series. His wounded soul called out to me and I wanted to hear his story like yesterday, lol.

Kallypso is the Master at writing such emotional, heart-felt erotic romance and she had me weeping in sympathy for these two characters. Of course, I managed to laugh a few times with the humorous dialog in between the crying jags as well. It was like a freakin' Steel Magnolias moment for me.

Savi's story is not one that I think is for the faint of heart. At the age of eight, she is sexually molested and sold as a sex slave by her very own father. She is brutalized in some unfathomable ways that will stun you--beaten and used as a pain slave for years until Savi thinks that suicide will be her only escape.

One night she is brutalized by two strangers who have paid her father for the use of her body and her screams catches the attention of a young man that works at the hotel. Damian is disgusted by what he sees and rescues her from the violence and gives her one night of pleasure; a consensual pleasurable experience that forever resonates with both over the next nine years.

Savi, newly pregnant with Damian's child, escapes the horrible life her father has imprisoned her in and takes refuge in a neighboring church. Her sole reason for living is the child within her belly. And she will protect it at any cost. Even if it means searching the child's father eight years later when Savi's father locates her and threatens to return her to his abusive, sick and sadistic control.

What follows is a slow growing relationship that builds over time. Savi has long buried the pain of her abusive upbringing--unable to cry, unable to feel. Numb to everything, even the feel of her child's arms when she envelops her in a warm hug.

With Damian as her Top, Savi  is able to break through some of the emotional walls --one brick at a time -- that she has encased around her. Kallypso does this slowly, realistically, and the pacing is spot on. Their relationship is not rushed and is at times tearfully touching.

There is even humor in this tragic story. Their playfulness lightens the tense moments of such a serious matter. It gave me the warm fuzzies and giggles as Damian nick named his penis, Chico. Savi shows her humorous side when she reciprocates by naming her vajay-jay, Chiquita...

"Hell, I'd die a happy man if you just let me kiss Chiquita at least once a day." -- Damian.

Damian's unending patience is just what Savi needs in order to heal. And she is able to reconnect to her sensual side and actually feel things for the first time. These two souls are perfect for each other--providing what the other needs, while loving the person as they are--faults and all.

This story is on my keeper shelf, Kallypso!

Chapter One

Damián wasn't home. What now?

She'd arrived in Denver a couple of hours ago and had come straight to the address Anita had retrieved from Damián's niece's file at the clinic. Savi had already driven across the state of California by the time Anita, her friend who worked as the clinic's receptionist, returned her call for help. Savi knew Damián lived somewhere in Denver and that the further away she could get herself and her daughter from Lyle and her father, the better.

Savi and Anita both knew looking in a patient's confidential file was unethical, not to mention illegal. However, Anita understood some of the brutalities of which her father and Lyle were capable of, having supported Savi through years of extensive therapy. Even what little she'd shared with Anita was enough for her friend to want Savi and Mari both out of harm's way, too, regardless of whether it meant Anita would lose her job.

Savi hoped that wouldn't happen. She owed Anita everything. She didn't want her friend to become more collateral damage.

Looking into the backseat, she saw Mari still slept soundly. When Damián hadn't answered the door, she'd taken Mari to get something to eat at a fast-food place down the street, and then returned to knock at his door again. Still no answer. She'd decided wait for him in the parking lot. She knew of no other place to look for him.

After an hour or so, she began to worry that perhaps he'd returned to California or gone somewhere else. What if he didn't come home at all tonight? She couldn't risk getting a motel room and using a credit card. Most decent ones wouldn't take cash without a credit card to back it up. She didn't want Mari to sleep in the cold car.

What if he brought a woman home? That would be awkward. But she had nowhere else to go. Fear clawed at her, but she pushed it away. She needed to be strong for Mari. Don't panic.

Off and on for the past hour, she'd run the engine to keep the car's temperature comfortable. Mari had fallen asleep soon after dinner. Her beautiful baby had asked a thousand questions on the almost two-day drive here, but seemed content when Savi told her they were going to visit the nice man they'd met at church after choir practice a while back. Savi couldn't believe Mari even remembered him, but she'd asked immediately, "Damián?"

Please, God, don't let this be a mistake. Neither of them could afford to complicate their lives with impossible emotional attachments. And anything having to do with a man would be impossible.

So then why was she here on Damián's doorstep?

Simply put, there was no one else she could turn to. Everyone in California could be controlled or easily coerced by her father, except for Father Martine and Anita. They'd already put themselves in too much danger by giving her cash to travel on and promising not to reveal anything to Lyle if he tracked her to either of them.

The roar of a motorcycle entering the parking lot drew her attention. She watched as the man in the leather pants and the Harley Davidson-emblazoned vest pulled into a numbered spot near the stairway. His lean, muscular body looked lethal. He set the kickstand, turned the key, and swung his leg over the back of the bike, then unhooked the chin strap on his helmet.

Damián.

Before he'd even pulled the helmet off, she recognized him. Her heart thudded against her chest. His queue sticking out below the helmet at the nape of his neck tipped her off, then he turned sideways and she saw the familiar mustache and goatee. He didn't look in her direction, but made his way to the stairway. His shoulders slumped a bit as Savi watched him make his way up the steel staircase to the second floor of the old motel building. Was he limping? She hoped he wouldn't be too tired to help deal with two unexpected and desperate guests tonight, because she was about to invade his world with a vengeance.

Again.

He'd helped immobilize Teresa's father last month when the bastard had returned to try and hurt his daughter again. The vile man probably wouldn't be free again for a very long time. Damián's niece was lucky to have a champion like him on her side. Now Mari and Savi needed him in their corner.

Glancing at her sleeping daughter, she decided to just lock the car and let her sleep until after Savi talked to Damián. She wouldn't have to let her baby out of her sight, because Damián's apartment was in a converted motel complex with exterior entrances. She didn't know why it was important, but she didn't want to drag Mari up there only to be disappointed by him if he turned them away.

After summoning enough courage to proceed, Savi held her side and took as deep a breath as possible. She opened the door and got out. A blast of frigid wind caused her to quickly shut the door, hoping she hadn't let too much of the car's warmth escape. A quick check through the backseat window told her Mari still slept. Savi hoped she'd be able to tuck her into a real bed tonight.

Her foot slipped on a patch of snow as she crossed the parking lot to the stairway. These shoes weren't really suitable for winter. They didn't get snow in Solana Beach. The wind out of the mountains cut through her jacket, as well. She hadn't had money to spare for new clothes, but if they were going to stay here any time at all, she needed to get Mari a warmer coat. She'd look into finding a thrift store tomorrow.

As she climbed the stairs, she pulled out a pair of sunglasses. She must look ridiculous wearing them at night, but she didn't want to freak Damián out first thing by letting him see her bruised and swollen eye from Lyle's attack. She couldn't totally hide her cheek, but glasses were better than nothing.

Steeling herself, she reached out and pressed the doorbell. Savi waited, crossing her arms to help keep warm. Concerned about Mari, she turned and looked back down at the car parked under a bright street light. Safe.

When the door opened, she was forced to turn toward him. A look of concern crossed his face at seeing her, which puzzled her.

“Did something happen to Teresa?”

“Teresa? No.” Then realization dawned. She held out her hand with the palm facing him to allay his fears. Damián's sixteen-year-old niece had been raped nearly five weeks ago and Savi had been making progress as her therapist…until she'd been fired. “No! I’m sure she’s fine.”
Another blast of cold air caused her to wrap her arms tighter around herself.
“Come in.” He stood aside and motioned her in.

“No, I can’t. I…” Savi turned and looked toward the car, not wanting to let her baby out of her field of vision. She turned back at him, not knowing how to start.

“Why are you here? How did you find me?”

She lowered her head. How to answer those questions without getting the door slammed in her face? “I looked at the next of kin info in Teresa’s file.” She didn't want to implicate Anita in the breach of confidentiality. “We need your help.”

“We?”
About Kallypso Masters

Kallypso Masters writes emotional romance novels with dominant men and the women who bring them to their knees. Sometimes it seems she lives with these Masters at Arms Doms twenty-four/seven—yes, they tend to dominate her life. Often, she’ll wake up with one or more characters waiting by her bedside to share some delicious secret about themselves. It’s a tough job, but she loves every minute of it.

Kally has been writing full-time since May 2011, having quit her “day job” the month before to pursue a full-time writing career. Masters at Arms was her debut novel (published in August 2011) and was followed by Nobody’s Angel in September and Nobody's Hero in December. (These are just the manuscripts she’s allowing to be published to date. Many earlier ones will remain in that box on the shelf where all practice novels should go.)

She lives in rural Kentucky and has been married for almost 29 years to the man who provided her own Happily Ever After. They have two adult children, one rescued dog, and one rescued cat—and now four Doms (Adam, Marc, Damián, and Luke) and a Domme (Grant) have taken up residence in her head.
