Warriors of the Rift

Once a generation, the rift between the paranormal world and the human world opens, allowing supernatural entities to cross. Vampire, demon, or shape shifter, they can save the world-or send it spiraling into chaos.

Half-demon, half-human, Nix de la Fuente is accepted by neither and mistrusted by both. Determined to prove she's more human than not, she devotes herself to solving crimes between the world's mortals and its most unsavory undead. But her latest case brings her face to face with the one vampire she could never resist . . .

Called in to investigate a string of violent murders, special agent Tobias Caine isn't interested in rekindling his relationship with Nix. Yet one look and the vampire knows his need for her is as strong as ever. Once, their all-consuming passion nearly cost Nix her fragile hold on her humanity. Now, as their hunger for one another intensifies, exposing them to an unimaginable danger, it could cost them both their lives.

Book Review

Cynthia Garner has penned a paranormal tale with a unique twist. The creatures that go bump in the night-- Vamps, Weres, Fae and such-- are from another dimension. Banished from their home planet, they land on earth and seek out another body as a host in which to inhabit. A human body.

Tobias Caine has followed his arch enemy through the rift in search of the man who has assassinated his king. He is hell bent on finding this mad man with only one goal-to kill him.

Nix de la Fuente is a hybrid. Half-demon, half-human. She struggles to keep her demon at bay, a fight that gets more difficult each day.

Her ex-lover showing up doesn’t help. She’s pissed, hurt, and yet, still desires the man that left her five years ago. And all these emotions bring her inner demon closer to the surface.

Although Cynthia has created a unique paranormal world, I did not get a deep connection with this story or its characters.

I am a fan of romantic suspense-the chase, the tension, and the building climax when the bad guys are revealed—and Cynthia has developed an intriguing tale that kept me reading to find out who was the guilty party. But I felt that the relationship between Tobias and Nix were lacking a key element. There was too much concentration on the instinctual connection between the lovers (pheromones, etc), and not enough of an emotional connection.

Her second book in the series, Secret of the Wolf, is expected to release 7/01/12
