Book Review

I have been on a bad boy kick lately. And Nikolai definitely qualifies... to an extent. He is a multi-layered character that can't be summed up easily and tied up in some pretty package. He is a dark and tortured soul. An assassin with a moral code. A loner who has no ties to family or friends. A man who longs for that certain someone but doesn't think he deserves it.

Daisy is a sheltered soul. After the murder of her mother, she has been sequestered away in her home, only allowed out to run errands for her father. At first I wanted to hate her father for his actions, but his paranoia was a result of his wife's killer who was out in the world somewhere...possibly waiting to carry through with the threat to end him. Her father's pain and fear truly came to light later on in the story.

But Daisy has had enough seclusion. She wants to feel the sun against her skin. She wants to see the world and be a part of it. So she escapes, despite her guilt at abandoning her father. Her lack of monetary funds has her living in a not so safe neighborhood and taking a job at a local gas station. But she is experiencing life for the first time and the sun feels good. 

Nikolai is on a job when he spots Daisy across the way and he is instantly taken with Daisy. It isn't her beauty, but the way she reacts to the world around her. And he simply falls under her spell. 

But how can an assassin and a naive young woman even contemplate having a relationship with so many secrets between them.

Especially when the mafia interferes and attempts to render them apart. 

After reading a lot of mixed reviews--it seems that Last Hit could go either way for the reader. But this reader loved the characters, the story, and the jolting climax. I will definitely stick around to read the second installment by author, Jessica Clare.

Book Review 

Billy Reichert and Eve Edens have a tangled past that has left Billy's heart broken and hurt. He has built a fortress around his jilted heart and will never forgive Eve how she ended things between them.

Julie Ann Walker has created a great romantic suspense series with her BKI men. All of the Alpha men in this covert group are sexy, fierce, and kick-ass baddies that will make a woman swoon.  And I love the fact that Julie gives the reader more than just the H/h to get to know and understand. The secondary characters are used wisely and you can see the sexual tension build between Delilah and Mac. My only complaint would be that I would have loved to have seen more of other past characters (Big Smile). 

While some of the plot and story structure came across as cliche, I still love reading this series. It's solid characters and continued building story line will definitely keep me around.

Book Review

I love and adore this series. And with each book, I love the heroes of Swan's Phoenix Rising series. 

In Rush, Q has been rescued by the other members of his firefighting team. The same team that were involved in a bio hazard explosion five years ago. The same team that now have special supernatural powers since said explosion. And the same team that are now fighting to save their lives as one maniac searches to destroy them. 

The Phoenix Rising series is one that MUST be read in order, as the story builds on itself--and jumping ahead will only lead to mass confusion. 

Q has been thought to be dead for the last five years. And Jessica Fury, his widow, is afraid to believe that Quaid is alive. She has spent the last year fighting a grief that had her turning to drugs and meaningless sex in order to forget the man she would always love. And the slightest hint of hope could send her back down inside the dark abyss of addiction. 

But there is no denying that Q, the man they rescue, is her husband. 

And there is also no denying the fact that Q is not the same man he was five years ago. He's been tortured, tested, and drugged for over five years in a secret black op experiment -- one that goes way beyond ethical, moral, and with a evil man in power hell bent in making sure Q is returned to line his pockets with dirty money. 

Q cannot remember his past. He has no memory except for the torture and experiments that have been done to him. Jessica knows that Quaid has a long road ahead of him. He may be alive, but he has seen things, done things, that have changed him. But he is still the move she loves. And Jessica is afraid that the things she has done while grieving his loss could destroy their fragile connection. So she treads carefully, hoping that the secret she keeps will not come back to destroy their chance of a happy reunion. 

Joan Swan writes a compelling, nail-biting thriller with appealing characters. The fact that the reader can re-visit Tag, Alyssa, Luke, Kiera, Mitch, Cash, and Kai is a huge plus. I love them all. With a special place reserved for the ever humorous and ever mysterious Mitch. I call dibs on him. 

Rush gives more information about DARPA and what exactly the evil Schaeffer expected to gain with his deadly plans. But of course, there are cliffies and hints of other possible side stories developing in the wings. I wait anxiously for December and the release of Shatter, book four in the Phoenix Rising series. I'm hoping that Swan will not leave the mysterious Trent alone in Pakistan. 

The Phoenix Rising series is a highly addictive read that grabs you and won't let go.

Book Review

I have found another great series by a new-to-me author and I feel a little giddy inside. But I have to be honest; I wasn't expecting to like the book. I can admit I was intrigued by the dark and sexy cover. Imagine my surprise when I continued to read the story and couldn't put it down. 

Lick is a story about Evelyn Thomas--a young woman out to celebrate her twenty-first birthday with her gal pal and roommate, Amanda. But too much tequila kills a few too many memory cells and the night before is a total wasteland. 

Zip. Nada. Empty. 

But the gorgeous guy in her hotel is telling her that something definitely happened. And the rock she's sporting on her left hand is another whammy to her already nauseated and hung over self. Finding herself married to the sexy, tatted stranger?  

Well...that's something she hopes stays in Vegas, never to see the light of day.

But with her hubby's name tattooed on her ass (and only a wisp of memory of having said tat inked on her derriere), that makes it rather difficult to forget the entire debacle. 

Not to mention the fact that when her plane lands back in Portland, the paparazzi is waiting to ambush her and Evelyn realizes that her new husband is a famous guitarist for the rock band, Stage Dive. 

Swearing never to drink again, she's looking forward to getting the marriage annulled and getting her life back on track. Having a rock star husband is not in her plans. But with her name in the media, she soon loses control of her well thought out college plans and has to relinquish her internship with a highly respected architect firm.  

What follows is the tender and raw story of how two people found each other in the glamorous Sin City. Their instant connection led to a spontaneous decision that could either make or break them. As Ev and David try to come to terms with what's happened and consider whether to just walk away or give their marriage a try, they experience a few road bumps along the way. I loved the vulnerable side of David and how he tried to recreate the night he and Evelyn met in Las Vegas. And I loved how Evelyn slowly discovered the stranger she married and realized how they made each other stronger. Ev and David were better together than they were apart. And together, they found out that some things are definitively worth fighting for.

Book Excerpt

Rushing onto the plane, I looked down the aisle and spotted my seat right away. And then I saw her. I saw her…

She appeared to be sleeping; she had ear buds in and a travel pillow around her neck. Right before I approached, she glanced up at me and that’s when I blurted out, “Hey!” I paused, searching for words as I stared directly into her eyes, her really gorgeous eyes, the kind you just want to dive into and swim around in. “Do you want the window seat? It’s all yours if you do.”

She scowled. “Huh? Uh, no thanks.”

I think I pissed her off. Man, this girl was cute, pretty, no… beautiful. She had a bunch of silky, dark hair wrapped in a bun on top of her head. I never get nervous around women, but in that moment I was more nervous than I had been in my entire life.

“I’m a terrible flier,” I told her. “Please, I need to be in the aisle. I’m sorry, do you mind? I’m Will, by the way…”

She stood abruptly and grabbed her things. Without making eye contact, she stuck her hand up and mumbled, “Yeah, fine, you can sit there. I’m Mia.”

Rearranging the overhead compartment, I startled her when I threw her bag on my seat. She looked up at me. Man, those eyes.

“Sorry, baby, I’ve got to make room for her.” She shrugged and pretended to ignore me, but seconds later I caught her staring at me out of the corner of her eye. I was totally getting to her.

I plopped down in my seat, looked over at her, and smiled. My eyes were immediately drawn to her blushing mouth with its naturally pink, pudgy little bottom lip. I wanted to suck on that lip.

“Why didn’t you request an aisle seat?”

“Well, you see, sweetheart, I like to be right behind the emergency exit. I’ll hop over this seat, jump out the door, and be down that super slide in a split second.”

“Then why not request the exit aisle?”

“I am not the person for that job, trust me.”

“Damn, chivalry is dead. It doesn’t matter anyway; our lives are in the hands of these hopefully sober pilots and this nine-hundred-thousand-pound hunk of metal, so…”

“Can we stop talking about this? I don’t think you understand.” I didn’t want to shut her down, the banter was refreshing. Plus, I love girls with brains and a backbone, but my nerves were getting to me. I took out the rosary I’d bought in the gift shop started to peel the price tag off it. She continued needling me with her melodic little voice. It was hard to concentrate on what she was saying because I was mesmerized by her, completely enchanted by the way she smelled, her eyes, and man, those lips.

After chuckling at another one of her digs, I finally turned toward her and whispered, “Hey, little firecracker, you like taunting me, don’t you?” 

“Sorry,” she mumbled. I winked at her and watched her reaction. She sucked in a breath, making the tiniest sound, and then swallowed and looked away, but not before her eyes trailed down my entire body and back up.

While I was memorizing the safety procedures, the pilot scared the shit out of me when he came on the speaker to announce that we were cleared for takeoff.

“Jesus Christ! Did he sound drunk to you?”

With a look of sympathy, Mia turned toward me and in the calmest voice said, “Not at all. Relax, buddy, everything will be fine and you should probably tone down the Jesus Christs, at least while you’re still wearing that thing.”

I asked her to open the screen so I could see us get off the ground and then I leaned over and inhaled deeply. She smelled so clean.

“You smell good,” I told her. “Like rain.” She blushed again and then asked me about my guitar. She knew something about guitars, I could tell. When the plane started to take off, I gripped the armrest. She put her hand over mine and just held it there while we continued our conversation. The warmth of her hand was calming. When I would tighten my grip, she would tighten hers. I think it was subconscious. I’m sure she didn’t notice she was doing it, but she comforted me.

When she mentioned that her father had just passed away, her eyes started to well up. I took my other hand and put it on top of hers. I think that was first moment she realized where her hand had been because she yanked it away and wiped her eyes. I immediately apologized for her loss.

“It’s okay, but I’d rather not talk about it right now. Let’s talk about guitars.” She had this really sweet, genuine, but totally pained, look on her face. It was like she was trying to be strong and hide the hurt, but her expressive eyes and face made that impossible.

We talked the whole length of the flight and I just kept thinking that I had to know this girl. I needed to be in her life, but I could tell she was going through something, so I tried to keep it light.

As we started to descend, I panicked at the thought that we could walk off this plane and never see each other again.

“Mia, we’re going down. I need to know everything about you right now! How old are you, what’s your last name, what street do you live on? If we make it out of this, I think we should jam together, you know, musically or whatever.”

“My last name is Kelly, I’ll be at my father’s café most days—Kell’s on Avenue A. Come and have a coffee with me sometime and we’ll talk music. Oh, and I’m twenty- five.”

It seemed like we had so much in common. I couldn’t believe my luck getting to sit next to her. She was beautiful, but in the humble way, not insecure, humble. She was smart and funny and sarcastic and witty and she loved music, but on top of that she was gentle. She wanted to comfort me, even if she didn’t realize she wanted to, and that’s what she’d done. Maybe it was fate that I sat next to her that day, or serendipity, divine intervention, who knows? However you look at, I got seated next to the first girl to ever really steal my heart. I was in love from that moment on. I knew Mia, with all her grief, sensitivity, and depth would be a challenge, but that made me want her even more.

I lowered my voice. “We both have double first names. I’m Will Ryan, twenty- nine. I live at 22 Mott Street in the storage closet. I work at the Montosh. I’m O negative, you know, the universal one, and I play in a band called the Ivans. Oh, and I love coffee. It was nice to meet you, Mia.”

“It was nice to meet you too,” she said.

“We made it,” I told her. “You know, they say people who have stared death in the face together are bonded for life?”

She giggled. “Your antics are cute, Will.”

“I was going for irresistible,” I said and then I watched her stumble and nervously grab her things. I walked behind her, up the aisle toward the exit. Some dickwad practically knocked her over when he tried to cut into the line. “Hey! Watch it, buddy!” When Mia turned and shot me the cutest smile, I said, “See, baby, chivalry isn’t dead.”

I followed her all the way out to the curb. She didn’t turn around once as she waited for a cab. I lit a cigarette, looked up to the sky, and prayed. Right as her taxi began to pull away from the curb, she glanced over at me. I waved really big and mouthed, “Goodbye, Mia, you Sweet Thing.”

At that moment I wanted so badly to call Dick Payne and tell him about the flight. I wanted to tell him I didn’t think about dying once… All I thought about was living.

You have a small tube of chap stick or something in your pocket that's poking me." Maybe she shouldn't have emphasized small. Guys were kind of sensitive about that sort of thing, right? 

I really enjoyed this book--funny, sexy, and it is gonna be a series! I cannot wait to read more of these sexy Irish brothers as they meet their soul mate and try to break the curse.

Sometimes when I am reading, I'll read something that just stirs me, makes me wish I had thought of it, and has such a great emotional meaning. This passage from The Stillness of You was like that.

I loved this. It is very sexy to me.

I am a huge fan of author, Jaci Burton. She writes with such passion and pens such amazing characters. And I am doing a happy dance right now because she is starting a new series--A Hope Novel Series.
