FIFTH GRAVE PAST THE LIGHT BLOG TOUR BY DARYNDA JONES

Never underestimate the power of a woman
on a double espresso with a mocha latte chaser high.

Charley Davidson isn’t your everyday, run-of-the-mill grim reaper.  She’s more of a paranormal private eye/grim reaper extraordinaire.  However, she gets sidetracked when the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, moves in next door. To further complicate matters, Reyes is her main suspect in an arson case.  Charley has vowed to stay away from him until she can find out the truth…but then dead women start appearing in her apartment, one after another, each lost, confused, and terrified beyond reason.  When it becomes apparent that her own sister, Gemma, is the serial killer’s next target Charley has no choice but to ask for Reyes’ help.  Arsonist or not, he’s the one man alive who could protect Gemma no matter who or what came at her. But he wants something in return. Charley. All of her, body and soul. And to keep her sister safe, it is a price she is willing to pay.

Charley Davidson is at it again in Fifth Grave Past the Light, the sexy, suspenseful, and laugh-out-loud funny fifth installment of the New York Times bestselling series by Darynda Jones.

The other day, my best friend and I were discussing what makes a great read. And the one thing we agreed on was that we love it when a book makes us laugh out loud.

Darynda Jones's Charlie Davidson series does just that.

I could rave for days on how much I enjoyed (okay, devoured) each book as it is released. The writing, the humor, the sexual tension, the uniqueness of the story…all of it combined make this such an addictive series. I go crazy with the highlighted feature on my kindle, underlining favorite passages, quotes, and quirky t-shirt slogans--just so that I can discuss these witticisms with my friends and laugh all over again.

In Fifth Grave, Charlie finds herself with a new neighbor—the extremely sexy Reyes. He is the son of Satan, the portal into Hell, and has a most unusual relationship with Charlie.

Charlie is one of the Grim Reapers on this earth. The dead pass through her to get to the beyond. However, sometimes the dead aren't very cooperative and hang around a bit.

And in Fifth Grave, the bodies are seriously stacking up. Her apartment is overrun by young girls who have been murdered. They dangle from the ceiling, cower under her bed, and it's like walking through a mine field trying not to step on one of the apparitions.

I really hate plot outline in reviews, so I'll skip all that mumbo jumbo and give you a broad representation of what you can expect with this book.

Fifth Grave is a bit darker than the rest of the books in the series (Thank you, Darynda) but is interjected with enough humor to keep it from getting too heavy. Charlie and Reyes's relationship is heightened, with Charlie finding out more about her origins. As usual, Darynda only gives enough information to whet the reader's appetite. There are some answers, but more questions are thrown our way (banging head on desk in frustration).

We still have no clue who the hell Mr. Wong is, dammit.

Garrett, who has recently returned from Hell, is pissed. And there is a serious encounter between him and Reyes that will have your head reeling. Unbelievable.

One of my favorite aspects of Fifth Grave was also one of the most worrisome for me. And I'll tell you why.

Reyes has changed a bit in Fifth Grave. We get to see a different side of him not previously seen in the other books. He seems more laid back, comical, and although I thoroughly enjoyed this dimension to his character, I also worried that he was losing his edge. I like him a little dark, a little bad. I mean, he IS the son of Satan. I'm hoping that Darynda is only giving the reader a short reprieve before she throws a major monkey wrench in the story ARC. (Which she does at the end, by the way. Freaking brilliant and maddening at the same time).

Overall, Fifth Grave is filled to the rim with all sorts of goodness: a cheating husband that go off the deep end, unusual yet highly satisfying usage of kitchen utensils, a sexy apron-clad son of Satan that will make you whimper, and a thousand other positive attributes that make this the best book of this series.

Darynda Jones, you are just freaking brilliant.

Ask me about life after death.
—T-shirt often seen on Charley Davidson,
a grim reaper with questionable morals

The dead guy at the end of the bar kept trying to buy me a drink.Which figured. No one else was even taking a second look and I’d dressed to the nines. Or, at the very least, the eight- and- a-halves.But the truly disturbing part of my evening was the fact that my mark, one Mr. Marvin Tidwell, blond real estate broker and suspected adulterer, actually turned down the drink I’d tried to buy him.
Turned it down!
 I felt violated.
I sat at the bar, sipping a margarita, lamenting the sad turn my life had taken. Especially to night. This case was not going as planned.Maybe I wasn’t Marv’s type. It happened. But I was oozing interest. And I wore makeup. And I had cleavage. Even with all that going for me, this investigation was firmly wedged between the cracks of no and where. At least I could tell my client, aka Mrs. Marvin Tidwell, that it would seem her husband was not cheating on her. Not randomly, anyway. The fact that he could’ve been meeting someone in particular kept me glued to my bar stool.
 “C-come here often?”
I looked over at the dead guy. He’d finally worked up the courage to approach and I got a better view of him. I figured him for the runt of the litter. He wore round- rimmed glasses and a tattered baseball cap that sat backwards on top of muddy brown hair. Add to that a faded blue T-shirt and loosely ripped jeans and he could’ve been a skater, a computer geek, or a backwoods moonshiner.
His cause of death was not immediately apparent. No stab wounds or gaping holes. No missing limbs or tire tracks across his face. He didn’t even look like a drug addict, so I couldn’t tell why he’d died at such a young age. Taking into account the fact that his baby- faced features would make him look younger than he probably was, I estimated him to be somewhere around my age when he’d passed.
He stood waiting for an answer. I thought “Come here often?”was rhetorical, but okay. Not wanting to be perceived as talking to myself in a room full of people, I responded by lifting one shoulder in a halfhearted shrug.
Sadly, I did. Come here often. This was my dad’s bar, and while I never set up stings here for fear of someone I knew blowing my cover, this just happened to be the very same bar Mr. Tidwell frequented
.At least if it came to a knockdown drag- out, I might have some backup. I knew most of the regulars and all of the employees.
Dead Guy glanced toward the kitchen, seeming nervous before here focused on me. I glanced that way as well. Saw a door.
“Y-you’re very shiny,” he said, drawing my attention back to him.
He had a stutter. Few things were more adorable than a grown man with boyish features and a stutter. I stirred my margarita and pasted on a fake smile. I couldn’t talk to him in a room full of living, breathing patrons. Especially when one was named Jessica Guinn, to my utter mortification. I hadn’t seen her fiery red hair since high school but there she sat, a few seats down from me, surrounded by a group of chattering socialites who looked almost as fake as her boobs. But that could be my bitterness rearing its ugly head.
Unfortunately, my forced smile only encouraged Dead Guy.
“Y-you are. You’re like the s-sun reflecting off the chrome bumper of a f-fifty- seven Chevy.”
He splayed his fingers in the air to demonstrate, and my heart was gone. Damn it. He was like all those lost puppies I tried to save as a child to no avail because I had an evil stepmother who believed all stray dogs were rabid and would try to rip out her jugular. A fact that had nothing to do with my desire to bring them into the house.
“Yeah,” I said under my breath, doing my best ventriloquist impersonation,“thanks.” “I’m D-Duff ,” he said.
“I’m Charley.” I kept my hands wrapped around my drink lest he decide we needed to shake. Not many things looked stranger to the living world than a grown woman shaking air. You know those kids with invisible friends? Well, I was one of those. Only I wasn’t a kid,and my friends weren’t invisible. Not to me, anyway. And I could see them because I’d been born the grim reaper, which was not as bad asit sounded. I was basically a portal to heaven, and whenever someone was stuck on Earth, having chosen not to cross over immediately after death, they could cross to the other side through me. I was like a giant bug light, only what I lured was already dead.
I pulled at my extra- tight sweater. “Is it just me, or is it really warm in here?”
His baby blues shot toward the kitchen again. “Hot is m-more like it. S-so, I— I couldn’t help but notice you t-tried to buy that guy over there a drink.”
I let my fake smile go. Freed it like a captured bird. If it came back to me, it would be mine. If not, it never was. “And?”
“You’re b-barking up the wrong tree with that one.”
Surprised, I put my drink down— the one I bought myself— and leaned in a little closer. “He’s gay?”
Duff snorted. “N-no. But he’s been in here a lot lately. He l-likeshis women a little . . . l-looser.” “Dude, how much sluttier can I get?” I indicated my attire with asweep of my hand. “N-no, I mean, well, you’re a l-little—” He let his gaze travel thelength of me. “—t-tight.” I gasped. “I look anal?” He drew in a deep breath and tried again. “H-he only hits onwomen who are more s-substantial than you.” Oh, that wasn’t offensive at all. “I have depth. I’ve read Proust. No, wait, that was Pooh. Winnie- the- Pooh. My bad.” He shifted his non ex is tent weight, cleared his throat, and triedagain. “More v-voluptuous.” “I have curves,” I said through a clenched jaw. “Have you seenmy ass?” “Heavier!” he blurted out. “I weigh— Oh, you mean he likes bigger women.”
“E-exactly, while I on the other hand—”
Duff ’s words faded into the background like elevator music. So Marv liked big women. A new plan formed in the darkest, most corrupt corners of Barbara. My brain.
Cookie, otherwise known as my receptionist during regular business hours and my best friend 24/7, was perfect. She was large and in charge. Or well, large and kind of bossy. I picked up my cell phone and called her. “This better be good,” she said.
“It is. I need your assistance.”
“I’m watching the first season of Prison Break.
“Cookie, you’re my assistant. I need assistance. With a case. You know those things we take on to make money?”
Prison. Break. It’s about these brothers who—”
“I know what Prison Break is.”
“Then have you ever actually seen these boys? If you had, you would not expect me to abandon them in their time of need. I think there’s a shower scene coming up.”
“Do these brothers sign your paycheck?”
“No, but technically neither do you.”
Damn. She was right. It was much easier to just have her forge my name.
“I need you to come flirt with my mark.”
“Oh, okay. I can do that.”
Nice. The F-word always worked with her. I filled her in and told her the deal with Tidwell, then ordered her to hurry over.
“And dress sexy,” I said right before hanging up. But I regretted the sexy part instantly. The last time I told Cookie to dress sexy for a much- needed girls’ night out on the town, she wore a lace- up corset, fishnet stockings, and a feather boa. She looked like a dominatrix. I’d never been the same.

ARC BOOK REVIEW ~ DEATH AND THE GIRL NEXT DOOR BY DARYNDA JONES

Blurb from Goodreads
ARC provided by NetGalley

Ten years ago, Lorelei's parents disappeared without a trace. Raised by her grandparents and leaning on the support of her best friends, Lorelei is finally beginning to accept the fact that her parents are never coming home. For Lorelei, life goes on.

High school is not quite as painful as she thinks it will be, and things are as normal as they can be. Until the day the school's designated loner, Cameron Lusk, begins to stalk her, turning up where she least expects it, standing outside her house in the dark, night after night. Things get even more complicated when a new guy—terrifying, tough, sexy Jared Kovach—comes to school. Cameron and Jared instantly despise each other and Lorelei seems to be the reason for their animosity. What does Jared know about her parents? Why does Cameron tell Jared he can't have Lorelei? And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real? Thrilling, sassy, sexy, and inventive, Darynda Jones's first foray into the world of teens will leave readers eager for the next installment.

I will admit to being a die-hard fan of Darynda Jones ever since discovering her Charley Davidson series a while back. She writes with such charm and addictivness that keeps me coming back for more.

Death and the Girl Next Door is her first book in the new series, Darklight--and it's a Young Adult book to boot.

Right off the bat, I loved the three Amigos--bffs x 3--Lorelei, Glitch, and Brooklyn. Their conversations were humorous and their bond is a strong one that is envious. And I think I may have fallen in love with Glitch a little. He seriously stole the show a few times with his snarkiness.

At first glance, DatGND starts out like most YA paranormals:

*Lorelei can touch people and see things that no one else can.
*skanky girls you love to hate that give heroine a hard time.
*Twilight-y feeling in cafeteria when mysterious dark haired bad boy enters and can hear heroine thoughts.
*a possible love triangle (at first) where you're not sure who the bad guy is.

So what makes this story so different? Two words: Darynda.Jones.

I can't explain it, but her writing flows so effortlessly. Her characters are three-dimensional and full of flaws. Her humor is contagious. And man can she write a kiss scene that literally curls your toes.

She gives you a little to barely whet your appetite and leaves you wanting more--some secrets are revealed (and a little somewhat predictable), but there are so many more secrets left yet to discover and be revealed. Like what in the hell happened during the Boy Scout camping trip, D?  Seriously--it's killing me.

I simply loved the animosity between Cameron and Jared. Those two boys love to hate each other.

"You know," Jared said in a husky whisper I could barely hear, "your heart's beating a little fast." His smile disappeared. " I can take care of that for you."

Overall, Death and the Girl Next Door is a story about sacrifices, forbidden love, and apocalyptic possibilities when demons threaten the peace of mankind. Throw in some snarky humor, steamy first kisses, and a small town ready to do battle, you have a recipe for a great young adult series.

I'm hooked Mrs. Jones. Again. You slay me. And I am yours.

GUEST BLOGGER ~ CLARK HAYS AND KATHLEEN McFALL -- BLOOD AND WHISKEY

WELCOME, CLARK HAYS AND KATHLEEN McFALL, AUTHORS OF BLOOD AND WHISKEY

Also, check out the Blog Tour Giveaway Rafflecopter below at end of post.

Character Envy

Writing together, especially romances, can make for strange jealousies.

By: Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall

In 1999, we came up with a radical plan to save our romance: write together. We had just reunited after an epic break up that required a several-year cooling off period. When a not-so-chance meeting rekindled the flames, we decided to channel some of the excess passion into a joint creative project to hopefully avoid total combustion.

The Cowboy and the Vampire: A Darkly Romantic Mystery (Midnight Ink, 2010) — and a newly entangled romance — was the result. This May, we finished our second book, Blood and Whiskey, and we learned something important: our characters lead far more romantic lives than we do.

Of course, they’re also dealing with murderous vampire hordes, cold-blooded killers straight out of the old west, biblical prophecies, undead race wars and the care and feeding of an overly-sensitive dog-cow-dog named Rex. But even with all of that, and even setting aside the fact they are from very different worlds — she needs human blood to live, he’s more of whiskey drinker — Tucker and Lizzie have a romance for the ages.

It may be petty, but we’re kind of jealous.

And not just of the main characters. Elita, the fierce, sexy vampire warrior sworn to protect Lizzie, has seduced her way through half the undead world and left a trail of drained human bodies — stone cold dead but with smiles on their faces — stretching back thousands of years. In Blood and Whiskey, she finds herself sandwiched happily between a handsome Russian vampire, Rurik, and his supermodel human consort, Virote.

Us? Well, we find ourselves sandwiched between deadlines.

Early on, we figured that when romantic partners wrote together, it would involve far more reclining on satin sheets, sipping champagne and whispering sweet plotlines to one another. The truth is far less, well, romantic. Here’s what a typical exchange between us sounds like (names changed to protect the not-so-innocent):

Chuck: Did you finish your chapter yet?

Cathy: Almost, did you finish yours?

Chuck: I need about two hundred more words and a better description of the thing.

Cathy: What thing?

Chuck: The thing. In the mountains. With Elita.

Cathy: Oh yeah. I forgot about that. Should we talk about the next chapters?

Etc., until bed time.

Compare that to a scene from Blood and Whiskey featuring Tucker and Lizzie:

“Do you ever, you know, take a look when I’m dead? Does it turn you on to have a naked corpse next to you?”

“Woman, don’t be gross.”

“I’d probably take a peek. I mean, I do anyway, at least when you are sleeping. What’s the difference? It’s perfectly natural.” She nipped at his neck playfully.

“It’s un-natural. That’s why they call you un-dead.”

“Is what I’m feeling now, un-horny?”

“I’m pretty sure it’s the pregnancy hormones getting you all riled up.”

She unbuttoned her shirt and slipped his hand under, molding it around her breast and they both sighed. “You sure you haven’t felt me up when I’m cold and dead? I wouldn’t mind. And I wouldn’t know it if you, you know, did stuff to me.”

“No. I mean, yeah, I’m sure. I’d like to do stuff to you now though.”

“I like that idea.”

Is it any wonder we’re a little jealous?

Still, just in case it sounds like we’re complaining, we don’t write all the time. And the passion we channel into our characters has to come from somewhere.

But just one night with the wickedly sexy Aegis Guardian, Regan Cooper, shatters centuries of resolve. Yet their passion comes with a price. And Thanatos must face a truth more terrifying than an apocalypse-he's about to become a father. Demon-slayer Regan Cooper never imagined herself the maternal type, but with the fate of the world hanging in the balance she had no choice but to seduce Thanatos and bear his child. Now, as the final battle draws closer and his rage at being betrayed is overshadowed by an undeniable passion for the mother of his child, Thanatos has a life-shattering realization: To save the world, he must sacrifice the only thing he's ever wanted-a family.

Really, what is NOT to love? You have a tatted hero? Check. Scruffy-scruff on the face? Check. Shirtless? Yes, OH, Yes, Check. Nice ripped abdomen? And how, Check. Pretty, lickable man-nipples? .....excuse me, I have to stick my head in the freezer. I think I may have spontaneously imploded my girly bits.

Thanos and Regan are both fighters. And both face what seems insurmountable odds. These two fit together perfectly and have been an exciting read!

The writing and dialogue in Lethal Rider is down right explosive, laugh-out-loud, swoon worthy---everything I love and crave in a book.
“Crazy? try ceiling-licking, rabies-frothing, dish-ran-away-with-the-spoon-in-fucking-sane." -- Thanatos
Annnnd that is an apt description of how I feel when waiting for Reseph's story, lol. (Book Four, Rouge Rider ~ Expected release December 2012).

It’s been a long time coming...

First off, let me start by saying that C.L. Parker is my bestie. She and I have had many long conversations via the phone, and I have known her since the conception of her first book, Supernova, a little over a year ago. I had a front seat on this awesome journey and am very happy to review her first release.

That being said--I have also told my friend that I wouldn’t hold back on my review. I would be totally honest. If I thought her book was total shit, then I would tell her. She also demanded the truth from me...no holding back. We have that kind of friendship-we can be our deranged, snarky, bitchy selves and still love each other. C.L. is the type of friend that would tell me my ass is too huge in a pair of jeans, or to put on my big girl panties and deal.with.it. And vice versa.

Luckily, I loved her book---boy, did I sweat that one out. It was one of the reasons it took me so long to read it. The other reason was that I was familiar with the story. Kind of hard to read when you know what is going to happen. I like surprises.

But--I put my on my big girl panties  (wink, wink) and read Supernova.

This debut book was a breath of fresh air--no vamps, no weres, no witches...well...maybe some of you may see similarities and think this is about black magic, but that really isn’t what the story is about.

Kerrigan Cruz, only daughter to Hudson and Priscilla, has a disturbing dream the night that her Grammy Availia dies. It is also the eve of her twenty-fourth birthday and her life is about to change forever. Tired of living under the controlling thumb of her military father, and her extremely nauseating boyfriend, Jackson Knoff...yep...go ahead and laugh...This slime-ball has a  wicked case of halitosis that has Kerrigan wishing he would eat a damn tic-tac. Not to mention, he has failed to give her an earth-shattering orgasm. In fact, not even a tee-tiny one. The poor girl has never experienced the quivering of her girly bits, and that is just a damn shame.

Kerrigan  relocates to St. Augustine, Florida - the oldest city in the U.S., and home to the infamous Fountain of Youth - to live in her Grammy’s home. Along with her best friend, Gabriel Baxter - her very gay friend who provides some wacky moments in this book and will have you laughing your ass off in some parts. Gabe has no filter for his deviant mind, and considers himself an expert in all that is ‘DIVA.’ He is a wonderfully, interesting secondary character that pesters his way into your heart and sits down for a spell. Whether you want him to or not. LOL.

Enter Dominic Grayson. Sigh. A drool-worthy man who sets Kerrigan’s world off kilter from their first encounter.  He dons button-fly jeans, goes commando, and wears snug fitting tees that sport the logo of classic rock bands. But that is not what makes my legs feel like a wet noodle and my toes curl. It’s the fact that he plays the acoustic guitar. And he does it so sexily--

He stuck his chin out and sang with closed eyes. He felt every word he sang like they were a map to his soul....She wanted to lick the defined lines of the flexing tendons in his forearms. But most of all, she wanted to let her lips hover over his to feel them moving to form the words, inhale the breath of each lyric he sang, and taste the lust that spilled forth from the cavern of sin.

Dominic has a secret---a HUGE secret, that he’s afraid to tell Kerrigan about. This secret could put a stop to their delicate relationship. Dominic doesn’t want to lose Kerrigan and holds back a major part of himself that threatens the fragile bonds that tether them as one. He fights his growing, mutual attraction and leaves Kerrigan a very, very, frustrated woman.

There is plenty of UST in this book--much to my chagrin...heheeheh...-but the wait is SO worth it. Let’s face it. This southern gal knows how to write a smokin’ sex scene like nobody’s business. I will NOT post a spoiler here of that. You.must.read.it.

What had my stomach all in knots (and my girly bits tingling) while reading this very visual and intimate scene, was the emotional wallop that C.L. delivers during it. She paints such a vivid picture that is filled with raw emotions--not just the actions of the two lovers, but something that goes much deeper.

There are twists and turns in the story and questions that are still left unanswered-Thank GAWD, this is just the first book of three. That’s right, this is a saga. And I have asked C.L. not to share any details of the next two books. I love to be surprised, so she is just gonna have to put on HER big girl panties (holes and all) and suck it up. **Insert smile**

So, have I done my job and hooked you yet? I sure hope so. Because I have a tingly spidey sense that indicates this won’t be the last time we see this awesome newbie to the paranormal genre.

Now, I have this book on my fantasmic Kindle (say it with me, I am a Kindle HOOR). And I have highlighted the shit out of this book. But I don’t want to give away too much. Why in the hell would you read, if I did that? Snort.

But I must give you another taste....just a tee-tiny thing to wet your appetite and make you click that button over at Amazon....

His body sang to hers, an erotic composition of desire vibrating through every fiber of her being. She wanted to get lost in the alluring crescendos of each breath he took, and float like a feather on each exhalation he released.

I have swooned....once again...just writing that.

My honest rating of this book is 4 Stars...I have read other stories by her and know just what she is capable of. She has blown me away so many times with the power of her words. However, there are some areas that I believe she could have built upon, but for whatever reason, didn’t.

These few weak spots are my opinion. I stress that because I know what my girl can do. She knows it too. We have discussed the couple scenes that I am referring to, and she agreed. She also put the blame and shame on me, saying had I agreed to pre-read for her, I would have called her out on it, and she would have fixed it before it went to print. See? We tell it like we see it ;)

Also, not every reader thinks the same about a story. That’s the brilliant thing about writing--you grow as you go. And because of that, I know that C.L. Parker will no doubt develop into a fantastic author. She’s already well on her way.

Supernova has such wonderful pacing--you are on a roller coaster ride of twists and turns of a   well-developed plot. She adheres to her characters’ true nature and you aren’t left saying, “WTF?” Overall, I love Dominic and Kerrigan, and I am looking forward to the next book.
