Book Review

Gabby Ward grew up in a small town on the Outer Banks, along with her best friend, Casey Markham. After graduation, Casey's older brother and best friend, are the DD's for the recent grads as they get the drunk on. But the night turns Gabby's world upside down as she takes matters into her own hands and kisses Hunter Markham--her childhood crush. 

Hunter cannot believe his sister's best friend has just laid a lip lock on him. A kiss like no other he has received. It leaves him stunned, turned on, and disgusted with himself. He looks at her like a little sister. Granted, Gabby has grown up some, her body not in any way like a little girl. But he refuses to let the sizzling, hot kiss change things between them. 

Gabby mistakes Hunter's look of disgust for one toward her and just like that--her feelings for Hunter are flipped to one of hurt and anger. She will not let him how much his reaction has devastated her. And each time she runs into him over the next several years (although not often), she treats him with disdain.

Even though her heart never truly got over him.  

Hunter has spent several years traveling the globe as he sought to be the world's top surfer. But when Hunter's twin brother, Brody, gets out of prison, he returns to his coastal hometown and buys a local bar--Last Call. 

Gabby is now running her father's construction company and has put in a bid to do the revamping of Hunter's bar. She knows that if she gets the job, it will put her in direct contact with Hunter Markham. But she has her shields in place and there is no way she will fall for him this time around. 

But things are just as heated between the two now that they have matured and grown over the years. With their friendship recently mended, will Gabby take another chance at a possible relationship with Hunter when he makes his feelings known? 

I love the feel of the small coastal town on the Outer Banks. Being a NC gal myself, I felt right at home. There were also many other layers in the story--one very complex story with Brody Markham. He has been in prison for the last five years. He is aloof, moody, and going through a very difficult time adjusting to life on the outside once more. But the reader can get a sense of sparks and something developing between Brody and Alyssa. I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series with these two.  

Bennett has written an engaging tale with great characters and set it against one of my favorite places in the world--the beach. The story was lined with tension and heat guaranteed to make you wish for own tan, sexy, surfer and long, romantic walks along the beach. It definitely made me reminiscent of my own home town and the carefree days of summer. 

Last Call is a promising start to a pulse-pounding, addictive read.
